There’s something a little bit magical about greenhouses. They’re almost like stepping in to another world. Not simply outdoor rooms for growing things in - although, as someone who snacks daily on cucumber, I’m all for that functionality - they make the most beautiful working and entertaining spaces, too. Surrounded by Mother Nature’s best offerings, flooded with natural light, and not constrained by the practicalities involved in decorating a room that a family has to live in day in day out, they can be as wonderful and whimsical as you’d like. And I’d like that a lot.
Have a look at these greenhouses that Selina Lake styled for Alitex at the recent RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
First up, The Scotney, packed full of botanical character making it the most inspiring workspace ever. Imagine being able to read, tap away at a laptop, admire the comings and goings in the garden and then pot a few plants when you need to step away from the screen for a while. That’s the dream, right? Obviously, I’m now on the hunt for vintage filing cabinets to make my very own potting shed look a little more like Selina’s vision. I’m not so sure that I’d get away with having a neon sign in there, though.
Secondly, there was the incredible bespoke lean-to which is now going to make every other summertime party I go to seem substandard. A beautiful structure with the interiors a masterpiece of floral colour-clashing. Something I’m 100 percent on board with; I could have happily spent all day in it.
Instead, I now have a notepad full of ideas as to how I can create a similar aesthetic in my own garden on a shoestring budget. I basically need to hunt down lots of Anthropolgie accessories on eBay for a mere few pence and for the local garden centre to offer free trolley dashes. Not too much to ask for, right?
I could happily have moved in here even if it meant rolling out a sleeping bag every evening. If I didn't live with Paul and have two messy children, I honestly believe my house would look more like this. Maybe I should start sneaking more florals in and see if they notice. What do you think?
So which greenhouse are you opting for? And do you have any suggestions as to how I can convince Paul that we need to forget about the bathroom renovations and invest in the garden instead?
