RHS Tatton Park Flower Show ... thoughts on my first visit

Despite living less than an hour’s drive away, I’ve never been to Tatton Park. So, last week, I decided to rectify that and head to the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show. What better occasion for my inaugural visit, right?

I’m not sure what I was expecting (not Chelsea-like, obviously, but still a day packed with beautiful gardens) but it was definitely a different show to the one I imagined. While there was a handful of show gardens, I was really surprised not to see more of them. And it also seemed as though we had to stumble across them as opposed to them being proudly showcased or presented with a deserving fanfare. It definitely felt like they were secondary to the occasion rather than being the primary reason to visit the show.

Shopping opportunities rather than garden inspiration was the focus of the day. It was almost like visiting an amazing garden centre, albeit a very busy one serving customers copious amounts of Pimm’s. That said, I actually really enjoyed walking through the flower tents and chatting to the people behind the nurseries. I discovered so many fairly local to me that I had no idea even existed.

Would I go again? Yes, probably. It genuinely was a really nice day out. If you like ambling through pretty gardens and enjoy a spot of shopping (and don’t mind paying just shy of £30 for the pleasure plus however much food and drink you choose to consume), then you’ll have a thoroughly lovely time. If you’re looking to be wowed by incredible show gardens packed full of inspiration and innovation, maybe save your money for a different event.

Obviously, I took an obscene amount of photos but I’ve narrowed them down to my favourite thirty or so to share with you. I’m still none the wiser when it comes to flower identification but I have determined that I’m drawn to whites, pinks and purples, and anything grass of fern-like. So it seems as though I’ve settled on a colour scheme for when we change the planting in the garden - we currently have a lot yellows and reds and I simply can’t convince myself that I like them.

Have you ever been to the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show? What did you think?
